Sweet and Sour Onions Recipe

This Sweet and Sour Onion recipe originated in Rome and is revered by the Italians. This is a great side dish for a special meal.Note: You can change the number of people served by placing your cursor over "Servings". The Ingredients will adjust to the new number of servings.

  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 1/2 lbs. pearl onions peeled* - See note below
  • 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
  • Kosher salt to taste


  • Put raisins into a small bowl; cover with hot water and let soften for 30 minutes.Heat oil in a 12" skillet over medium-high heat.
    Add onions* and cook until golden brown, 8-10 minutes; pour off oil.
    Drain raisins.
  • Add raisins, vinegar and sugar and season with salt.Cook, stirring, until sauce thickens, 2-3 minutes.


*Note: How to peel pearl onions: Trim the root ends of the onions. Blanch the onions in boiling water for about 30 seconds and then transfer them to a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking. Pinch each onion at its stem end, and it should just slip out of its skin. If not, use a paring knife to remove the skin.
